This apple tart features a buttery crust filled with thinly sliced apples tossed in sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The tart is baked until golden and optionally glazed with apricot jam for a glossy finish. Serve warm or at room temperature, perfect with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg yolk
- 2-3 tablespoons cold water
For the Filling:
- 4-5 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honey crisp, or your favorite baking apples)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons apricot jam (optional, for glaze)
- 1 tablespoon water (optional, for glaze)
Instructions:
1. Make the Crust:
- In a food processor, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the egg yolk and pulse until combined.
- Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
- Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Apples:
- Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Place them in a large bowl.
- Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apple slices evenly.
3. Assemble the Tart:
- Preheat the oven to 375 F (190 C).
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch tart pan. Press the dough into the pan and trim the excess.
- Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern, starting from the outer edge and working your way to the center.
- Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.
4. Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
5. Optional Glaze:
- While the tart is baking, heat the apricot jam and water in a small saucepan until melted and smooth.
- Brush the glaze over the warm tart for a shiny finish.
6. Serve:
- Let the tart cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature, possibly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
