Prepare dough, mix gram flour, carom seeds, black pepper, asafoetida, baking soda, salt, and oil. add water to form a soft, pliable dough.
Rest dough, cover and let the dough rest for 15–20 minutes.
Shape fafda, divide dough into small portions. on a lightly oiled surface, press each piece with your palm to form thin, elongated strips.
Heat oil, warm oil in a deep pan over medium heat until a small dough piece rises slowly when added.
Fry fafda, gently place shaped dough strips into the hot oil. fry until golden and crisp, turning occasionally.
Drain and serve, remove fafda with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. serve warm or at room temperature, traditionally with fried green chilies and raw papaya chutney.
