Here’s a delicious recipe for homemade mozzarella sticks that are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside!
– 12 ounces mozzarella cheese (string cheese or block)
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– 2 large eggs
– 1 cup breadcrumbs (Italian seasoned or plain)
– ½ teaspoon garlic powder
– ½ teaspoon onion powder
– ¼ teaspoon salt
– ¼ teaspoon black pepper
– Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
– Marinara sauce (for dipping)
If using string cheese, cut each piece in half. If using a block, cut the cheese into sticks about 1/2 inch wide.
In three shallow bowls, set up your breading station:
– Flour: Place the flour in the first bowl.
– Eggs: Beat the eggs in the second bowl.
– Breadcrumbs: In the third bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
– Dredge each cheese stick in the flour, shaking off excess.
– Dip it in the beaten eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated.
– Roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere. For extra crunch, you can double coat by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps.
Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes. This helps prevent the cheese from melting too quickly while frying.
In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a breadcrumb; it should sizzle.
Carefully add a few frozen mozzarella sticks to the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown, turning them occasionally.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the mozzarella sticks and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
