What is Shikanji, you ask? Well, it’s a traditional Indian lemonade that’s bursting with flavors and offers the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy notes. Made with just a handful of ingredients that are easily available in most kitchens, Shikanji is a go-to drink for hot summer days, roadside stalls, and festive gatherings.

Here’s a simple recipe to make this delightful drink right in the comfort of your own home:

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 medium-sized lemons
  • 4-5 tablespoons of sugar (adjust according to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon of roasted cumin powder
  • A pinch of black salt (kala namak)
  • A pinch of rock salt (sendha namak)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
  • Ice cubes for serving

Instructions:

STEP 1- Juice the Lemons: Start by juicing the lemons using a citrus juicer or simply by squeezing them with your hands. Strain the lemon juice to remove any seeds or pulp.

STEP 2- Sweeten the Mix: In a pitcher or a large bowl, add the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Stir in the sugar until it dissolves completely. Adjust the amount of sugar according to your preference for sweetness.

STEP 3- Add Spices: Now, it’s time to add the flavorful spices. Sprinkle in the roasted cumin powder, black salt, and rock salt. These spices add a unique twist to the Shikanji, enhancing its taste and aroma.

STEP 4- Mix Well: Use a spoon to mix all the ingredients thoroughly until the sugar and spices are well incorporated with the lemon juice. Give it a taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

STEP 5- Chill and Serve: Place the Shikanji in the refrigerator to chill for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This allows the flavors to meld together and ensures that the drink is nice and cold when served.

STEP 6- Serve with Ice: When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the chilled Shikanji over the ice. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint leaves for a pop of color and extra freshness.
