Masala Idli is a delicious South Indian dish made from leftover idlis (steamed rice cakes) that are transformed into a flavorful, spiced treat. Here’s a simple recipe to make Masala Idli:
– Idlis: 8-10 (preferably a day or two old)
– Oil: 2-3 tablespoons
– Mustard seeds: 1 teaspoon
– Cumin seeds: 1 teaspoon
– Chana dal (split chickpeas): 1 tablespoon
– Urad dal (split black gram): 1 tablespoon
– Green chilies: 2, finely chopped
– Ginger: 1-inch piece, finely chopped
– Onion: 1 medium, finely chopped
– Curry leaves: A handful
– Turmeric powder: 1/2 teaspoon
– Red chili powder: 1/2 teaspoon
– Garam masala: 1/2 teaspoon
– Coriander powder: 1 teaspoon
– Tomato: 1 medium, finely chopped
– Salt: to taste
– Fresh coriander leaves: A handful, chopped (for garnish)
– Lemon juice: 1 tablespoon (optional)
– Cut the idlis into quarters or bite-sized pieces. You can use fresh idlis, but older idlis work best as they hold their shape better.
– In a large pan or skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
– Add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
– Add the cumin seeds, chana dal, and urad dal. Sauté until the dals turn golden brown.
– Add the chopped green chilies, ginger, and onions. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
– Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and coriander powder. Stir well.
– Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens and becomes mushy.
– Gently fold in the idli pieces. Mix well so that the idlis are coated with the spices and tomato mixture. Be careful not to break the idlis.
– Cover and cook for 5-7 minutes on low heat, allowing the idlis to absorb the flavors.
– Check for salt and adjust if needed.
– Turn off the heat and sprinkle chopped coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice if using.
– Serve hot as a snack or light meal. It pairs well with coconut chutney or a side of yogurt.
