Moong Dal Halwa is a rich and decadent Indian dessert made from moong dal (yellow split gram). This sweet treat features a creamy, smooth texture and a nutty flavor, achieved by cooking the dal with ghee (clarified butter), sugar, and aromatic spices like cardamom. Often garnished with chopped nuts and sometimes flavored with saffron, Moong Dal Halwa is known for its luxurious and indulgent qualities, making it a popular choice for festive occasions and special celebrations. Here’s a simple recipe on how to prepare it at home:

1. Ingredients

– 1 cup moong dal (yellow split gram)
– 1/2 cup ghee (clarified butter)
– 1 cup sugar
– 2 cups water or milk
– 1/4 cup milk
– 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
– 1/4 cup chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, etc.)
– A pinch of saffron strands (optional)

2. Instructions

Step 1- Prepare Moong Dal:

Rinse moong dal thoroughly. Soak it in water for 2 hours, then drain.

Step 2- Cook Moong Dal:

In a blender, grind the soaked moong dal into a coarse paste.

Step 3- Heat Ghee:

In a pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add the moong dal paste and cook, stirring continuously, until it turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma.

Step 4- Add Liquid:

Gradually add water or milk while stirring to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens and the dal is fully cooked.

Step 5- Add Sugar and Flavorings:

Stir in sugar, cardamom powder, and saffron (if using). Cook until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes thick.

Step 6- Add Nuts:

Mix in the chopped nuts and cook for a few more minutes until the halwa starts to leave the sides of the pan.

Step 7- Serve:

Garnish with additional nuts if desired. Serve warm.

Enjoy your delicious Moong Dal Halwa!
