Fruit custard is a delicious and refreshing dessert made from a creamy custard base mixed with an assortment of fresh fruits. It’s easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion. Here’s a simple recipe for making fruit custard:

1. Ingredients

– 2 cups milk
– 1/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
– 2 tablespoons custard powder (vanilla or fruit-flavored)
– 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
– Assorted fresh fruits (e.g., apple, banana, mango, grapes, pineapple, berries)
– Nuts and dried fruits for garnish (optional)

2. Instructions

Step 1- Prepare the Custard Base:

– In a small bowl, mix the custard powder with a few tablespoons of milk to form a smooth paste. This helps prevent lumps.
– In a saucepan, heat the remaining milk over medium heat. Add the sugar and stir until it dissolves.
– Once the milk is warm (not boiling), add the custard paste to the milk, stirring continuously to combine.

Step 2- Cook the Custard:

– Continue to cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens to a custard-like consistency. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
– Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard cool to room temperature.

Step 3- Prepare the Fruits:

– While the custard is cooling, wash and chop the fresh fruits into bite-sized pieces. Choose a variety of fruits for a colorful and flavorful mix.

Step 4- Combine and Chill:

– Once the custard has cooled, gently fold in the chopped fruits.
– If using heavy cream, whip it until soft peaks form and fold it into the custard for extra richness and creaminess.

Step 5- Serve:

– Transfer the fruit custard into serving bowls or glasses.
– Garnish with nuts, dried fruits, or a sprig of mint if desired.
– Refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the custard to chill.

3. Tips

– Fruit Choices: Use a mix of seasonal and colorful fruits for the best flavor and visual appeal. Avoid very watery fruits like watermelon as they can make the custard runny.
– Custard Powder: Adjust the amount of custard powder based on the thickness you prefer. Follow package instructions for best results.
– Creamy Texture: Adding whipped cream is optional but makes the custard extra creamy and luxurious.
