Desi style bread rolls are a delightful snack made with a spiced potato and green pea filling. The filling includes sautéed onions, green chilies, and aromatic spices, mixed with mashed potatoes and peas. The bread is flattened, filled, and rolled tightly before being deep-fried until golden brown. This recipe involves preparing the filling first, followed by assembling and frying the rolls. Serve them hot with green chutney or ketchup for a delicious treat. They are perfect for parties or as an evening snack.
Ingredients:
For the Filling:
- 2 medium potatoes (boiled and mashed)
- 1/2 cup green peas (boiled)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1-2 green chilies (finely chopped, adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves (chopped)
- 1-2 tbsp oil (for cooking)
For the Rolls:
- 6-8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
- Water (for sealing)
- Oil (for deep frying)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Filling
- Heat Oil: In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add cumin and mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Sauté Onions: Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Add Spices: Stir in the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Mix Potatoes and Peas: Add the mashed potatoes and boiled green peas. Mix well, then add garam masala and chopped coriander leaves. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread Rolls
- Flatten the Bread: Take a slice of bread, and trim the edges to remove the crust. Use a rolling pin to flatten the bread slice gently.
- Fill and Roll: Place a spoonful of the potato filling in the center of the flattened bread slice. Roll it tightly to form a cylindrical shape, sealing the edges with a little water. Repeat with the remaining bread slices and filling.
Step 3: Fry the Rolls
- Heat Oil: In a deep frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. To check if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of bread; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
- Fry the Rolls: Carefully place the bread rolls in the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. This should take about 3-4 minutes. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches if necessary.
Step 4: Serve
- Drain Excess Oil: Remove the fried rolls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Garnish and Serve: Serve the desi style bread rolls hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.

- These crispy and flavorful bread rolls are sure to be a hit at any gathering or as a delightful snack at home. Enjoy them with your favorite dips.
