Bread Pakoras are a popular Indian snack made by deep-frying bread slices coated in a spiced chickpea flour (besan) batter. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for tea-time or as an appetizer. Here’s a simple recipe to make delicious Bread Pakoras:

1. Ingredients

For the Pakoras:

– 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
– 1 cup chickpea flour (besan)
– 2 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
– 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
– 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
– 1 teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds)
– 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 teaspoon red chili powder
– 1 teaspoon garam masala
– 1 teaspoon coriander powder
– 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
– ½ teaspoon baking soda (optional, for extra crispiness)
– ¼ cup chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)
– Water (as needed, to make the batter)
– Oil (for deep frying)

For the Filling (Optional):

– 1 small onion, finely chopped
– 1 teaspoon chaat masala
– 1 teaspoon lemon juice

2. Instructions

Step 1- Prepare the Filling:

– In a bowl, mix chopped onions with chaat masala and lemon juice. This adds a tangy and spicy kick to the filling if desired.

Step 2- Prepare the Batter:

– In a mixing bowl, combine chickpea flour, cumin seeds, ajwain, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, coriander powder, salt, and baking soda (if using).
– Gradually add water and whisk to form a smooth batter. The batter should be thick enough to coat the bread slices but not too runny.
– Stir in chopped cilantro.

Step 3- Assemble the Pakoras:

– If using, spread the optional onion filling on 4 slices of bread, then top with the remaining 4 slices to make sandwiches.
– Cut each sandwich into 4 triangles or leave them whole, depending on your preference.

Step 4- Heat Oil:

– Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kadhai over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

Step 5- Coat and Fry:

– Dip each bread slice (or sandwich) into the prepared batter, ensuring it’s well coated on all sides.
– Carefully slide the coated bread into the hot oil and fry in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
– Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to remove the pakoras and drain them on paper towels.

Step 6- Serve:

– Serve hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.

Bread Pakoras are best enjoyed fresh and hot, making them an ideal snack for rainy days or as a delightful treat to share with family and friends.
