Warm Up This Winter With Homemade Besan Laddoo: Here's How

Besan laddoo is a classic Indian dessert made with roasted gram flour, ghee, and sugar. It’s a winter favorite, known for its warmth and energy-boosting properties. Roasting the flour slowly is key to achieving its nutty flavor. Adding cardamom and nuts enhances its taste and nutrition. Once shaped into round laddoos, they can be stored in airtight containers for weeks. This delicious and wholesome treat is perfect for family and festivals.

Ingredients (Makes approximately 15 laddoos):

  • 2 cups gram flour (besan)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)
  • A pinch of saffron strands (optional)

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • Sift the gram flour to remove any lumps. This ensures a smooth texture for the laddoos.
  • Powder the sugar finely if using granulated sugar, and keep it aside.

Step 2: Roast the Gram Flour

  • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan or kadhai over low to medium heat. Add the ghee and allow it to melt completely.
  • Once the ghee is melted, add the sifted gram flour gradually, stirring continuously with a spatula or whisk to avoid lumps.
  • Roast the gram flour on low heat for 20–25 minutes until it turns golden brown and releases a nutty aroma. Be patient and stir constantly to prevent burning.
  • If using saffron, soak the strands in a teaspoon of warm milk and mix them into the roasted gram flour at this stage.

Step 3: Add the Nuts and Cardamom

  • Add the chopped nuts to the roasted mixture and stir well.
  • Sprinkle in the cardamom powder for a burst of flavor. Mix thoroughly to combine all the ingredients.

Step 4: Cool and Add Sugar

  • Remove the roasted gram flour mixture from heat and let it cool slightly (it should be warm, not hot).
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar to the mixture while stirring continuously. Ensure the sugar blends evenly into the flour mixture.

Step 5: Shape the Laddoos

  • Once the mixture is well-mixed and cool enough to handle, take small portions of it and shape them into round laddoos using your palms.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining mixture. If the mixture feels too dry, add a tablespoon of warm ghee to help bind it.

Step 6: Garnish and Store

  • Garnish the laddoos with additional nuts or saffron strands if desired.
  • Place the laddoos on a tray to set completely. Once set, store them in an airtight container.

Tips for Perfect Besan Laddoos

  • Roasting is key: Ensure the gram flour is roasted evenly for the best flavor and texture. Undercooked flour can leave a raw taste.
  • Ghee quality: Use high-quality ghee for a rich and authentic flavor.
  • Adjust sweetness: You can increase or decrease the amount of sugar according to your preference.
  • Binding consistency: If the mixture doesn’t bind well, add a little more warm ghee or a spoonful of milk.

Why Make Besan Laddoo in Winter?

  • Energy booster: Rich in ghee and nuts, besan laddoo provides warmth and energy during cold months.
  • Nutritious: Packed with protein and healthy fats, it’s a wholesome snack for all age groups.
  • Delicious comfort: The earthy aroma and nutty sweetness make it a winter favorite.

Serve these delightful besan laddoos as a dessert or snack and enjoy their warmth and goodness during winter.
