For extra crispiness, the oven temperature can be increased towards the end. This versatile recipe is perfect for both savory and sweet variations

Ingredients

For the Hasselback Sweet Potatoes:

  • 2 large sweet potatoes (washed and scrubbed)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted) or olive oil (for a vegan option)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (for sweetness)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (for a warm, earthy taste)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary or thyme (finely chopped)

For Garnishing (Optional):

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon grated parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted pecans or walnuts (for crunch)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Sweet Potatoes

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 200°C (400°F) and allow it to heat up while preparing the sweet potatoes.
  • Wash & Scrub: Thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes under running water, scrubbing off any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
  • Slice Hasselback Style:
    • Place each sweet potato between two wooden spoons or chopsticks.
    • Using a sharp knife, make thin, even slices (about ⅛ to ¼ inch apart) along the length of the potato, stopping before cutting all the way through. The chopsticks will prevent you from cutting through entirely.

Step 2: Preparing the Flavor Infused Butter or Oil

  • In a small bowl, mix melted butter (or olive oil), honey (or maple syrup), minced garlic, sea salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, cinnamon, and chopped rosemary. Stir well to combine.

Step 3: Coating the Sweet Potatoes

  • Brush the Sweet Potatoes:
    • Using a pastry brush or spoon, generously coat the sweet potatoes with the butter mixture, making sure to get some of it between the slices.
    • Reserve some of the mixture to brush halfway through baking.

Step 4: Baking the Sweet Potatoes

  • First Bake (40 minutes):
    • Place the sweet potatoes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or foil.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, allowing them to soften.
  • Second Brushing & Baking:
    • After 40 minutes, take them out and brush them again with the remaining butter mixture.
    • Return to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the edges are crispy and golden brown.
  • Final Check:
    • Insert a fork or knife to check for doneness. The potatoes should be soft inside and crispy outside.

Step 5: Garnishing & Serving

  • Once baked, remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle with fresh parsley, parmesan cheese (if using), and toasted nuts for extra crunch.
  • Serve warm as a side dish for grilled meats, salads, or enjoy as a light meal with yogurt or sour cream.

Serving Suggestions

  • As a side dish with grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, or fish.
  • Topped with Greek yogurt or sour cream for a creamy contrast.
  • Drizzled with extra maple syrup or balsamic glaze for added depth of flavor.

Now you can enjoy beautifully crispy, caramelized, and flavorful Hasselback Sweet Potatoes at home.
