Discover The Secret To Perfect Chicken Momos At Home

Chicken momos are flavorful steamed dumplings made by stuffing minced chicken, onions, and seasonings into thin dough wrappers. The dough is prepared, rolled into discs, filled, and pleated carefully before being steamed for 12-15 minutes. The filling is moist and aromatic with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and pepper. Served hot with spicy chili garlic chutney or tomato sauce, these momos make a perfect snack or appetizer. Variations include fried or pan-fried momos for added crispiness.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Water (as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon oil

For the Chicken Filling:

  • 1 cup minced chicken (boneless)
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (finely minced)
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 2 green chilies (finely chopped, optional)
  • 1/2 cup cabbage (finely grated, optional)
  • 1/4 cup spring onions (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon oil

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  • In a large bowl, mix all-purpose flour and salt.
  • Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the mixture into a smooth, firm dough.
  • Add 1 teaspoon oil and knead again for a minute to make the dough soft and pliable.
  • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20–30 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Chicken Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the minced chicken, finely chopped onions, garlic, and ginger paste.
  • Add the grated cabbage, spring onions, and green chilies (if using) for added flavor and crunch.
  • Season with soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper powder, and salt.
  • Add 1 teaspoon oil and mix everything thoroughly.
  • Ensure the filling is moist but not watery. Set it aside.

Step 3: Shape the Momos

  • After the dough has rested, divide it into small lemon-sized balls.
  • Roll each ball into thin, round discs (about 3–4 inches in diameter). Use a rolling pin and dust with flour if needed.
  • Place about 1 tablespoon of the chicken filling in the center of each disc.
  • Fold and shape the momos:
  • Hold the edge of the disc and start pleating towards the center while sealing the filling.
  • Twist the top to seal completely or create your desired momo shape.

Step 4: Steam the Momos

  • Grease a steamer plate or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Place the momos on the steamer plate, leaving some space between each one.
  • Heat water in a steamer or a large pot with a steaming rack. Bring it to a boil.
  • Place the steamer plate inside, cover, and steam the momos for 12–15 minutes.
  • The momos are done when the dough turns shiny, firm, and no longer sticky.

Step 5: Serve the Chicken Momos

  • Carefully remove the steamed chicken momos from the steamer.
  • Serve hot with spicy chili garlic chutney, tomato sauce, or soy sauce.

Tips for Perfect Chicken Momos:

  • Dough Consistency: Ensure the dough is firm and elastic to hold the filling. Avoid too soft or sticky dough.
  • Filling: Make sure the chicken filling is moist but not watery; excess water can tear the dough.
  • Shaping: Keep the edges thin and pleat carefully to prevent the filling from leaking during steaming.
  • Steaming: Do not overcrowd the steamer as the momos might stick together.
  • Optional Variations: You can add spinach, carrots, or other vegetables to the filling for more texture and flavor.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve chicken momos with a homemade spicy red chutney (made with tomatoes, red chilies, and garlic).
  • Pair them with hot soup like clear chicken broth for a cozy meal.
  • For a crispy variation, pan-fry the steamed momos to make fried momos.

Enjoy these delicious homemade chicken momos as a perfect snack or appetizer.
