Easy Momos at Home
Momos, those delightful steamed dumplings originating from the Tibetan region, have gained immense popularity worldwide for their delicious taste and versatility. Whether enjoyed as a snack or a meal, momos are loved by people of all ages.
While they are widely available in restaurants and street food stalls, making momos at home can be a rewarding experience. With a few basic ingredients and simple steps, you can recreate this beloved delicacy in the comfort of your own kitchen.
Ingredients:
- For the dough:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Water, as needed
- For the filling:
- 200 grams minced chicken or vegetables (cabbage, carrots, onions, and garlic)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Soy sauce, 1 tablespoon
- Ginger, grated, 1 teaspoon
- Garlic, minced, 1 teaspoon
- Spring onions, finely chopped, 2 tablespoons
- Cooking oil, 1 tablespoon
Instructions:
STEP 1- Prepare the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, add the all-purpose flour.
- Gradually add water and knead until you form a smooth, pliable dough.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
STEP 2- Prepare the Filling:
- If using minced chicken, ensure it is cooked thoroughly. If using vegetables, finely chop them.
- In a pan, heat oil over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and grated ginger, and saut until fragrant.
- Add the minced chicken or chopped vegetables to the pan and cook until they are soft.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and soy sauce, and mix well.
- Add finely chopped spring onions and cook for another minute.
- Remove the filling from heat and let it cool completely.
STEP 3- Assemble the Momos:
- Divide the rested dough into small, equal-sized portions.
- Roll each portion into a thin, circular disc, approximately 3-4 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the prepared filling in the center of each disc.
STEP 4- Shape the Momos:
- To fold the momos, hold one edge of the disc and start pleating the edges, bringing them together to form a pouch-like shape. Pinch and twist the pleats to seal the momo securely.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling until all momos are shaped.
STEP 5- Steam the Momos:
- Grease a steamer basket with oil to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the shaped momos in the steamer basket, leaving some space between them to prevent sticking.
- Steam the momos for 10-12 minutes, or until the dough is cooked through and the filling is heated.
STEP 6- Serve and Enjoy:
- Once cooked, carefully remove the momos from the steamer.
- Serve hot with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as chili sauce, soy sauce, or a tangy tomato-based sauce.
Enjoy your homemade momos as a delicious snack or light meal!
